Loya Yirga approves the release of 400 Taliban prisoners “to clear the way to peace”

August 9, 2020

The Loya Yirga, the large gathering of the Afghan people with representatives of relevant figures from the country’s politics and civil society, this Sunday approved the release of 400 Taliban prisoners in order to “clear the way for peace negotiations” and prevent more “bloodshed “.

The announcement was made by Tolo News, citing an earlier draft from the gathering itself, which is expected to experience “minor changes” before final approval later in the day.

This group of prisoners is part of the list the Taliban handed over to the United States following the signing of their historic peace agreement on February 29, which envisaged the release of 5,000 insurgents and a thousand security forces in anticipation of the agreement’s beginning Peace talks between the Afghan government and the armed group.

This liberation process is the main obstacle to establishing contacts as the executive refuses to accept the entire list submitted by the Taliban to Washington as Kabul did not participate in this discussion process and is not committed to its conclusions.
