May 18, 2020

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Monday that “very little is left” to “tame” the coronavirus pandemic in the country, which remains a balance of 49,219 confirmed cases and 5,177 deaths .

“Very little is missing, I have a lot of confidence, many hopes that we will end the pandemic, I will explain that shortly,” he said at the daily press conference of the Mexican newspaper ‘Milenio’.

At the same time, however, he emphasized that in order to “go horizontal”, Mexicans still have to respect preventive measures that “mean healthy distance and care”. “We need to maintain discipline to achieve the new normal,” he said.

Mexico is one of the countries most affected by COVID-19 in Latin America, although López Obrador has refused to impose a national quarantine and has limited himself to making recommendations that he believes the Mexicans have followed.
