The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has confirmed that the coronavirus test he underwent prior to traveling to the US produced a negative result, although he has assured him that he will have no problems to be repeated if the house so requests. López Obrador said at a press conference that the test had never been done before “because it had no symptoms”. Because of the “responsibility”, however, he decided to proceed as a previous step to his official visit to the neighboring country: “I am carrying my certificate.”
“If I have to do the test again, I have to do it because I have to respect the rules,” said López Obrador, who clarified that this possible requirement would not be an “error”. Mexico has registered more than 261,000 positive coronaviruses and more than 3,100 deaths as of Monday.
The Mexican president is traveling to Washington this Tuesday to meet Trump for an expected meeting, the main axis of which will be the recently entered into free trade agreement signed by Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC). Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will not participate in the appointment.
