Lithuania and Latvia are calling for repeated presidential elections in Belarus

August 18, 2020

The parliaments of Lithuania and Latvia this Tuesday urged the holding of new elections in Belarus to end the wave of protests sparked in the country following the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko on August 9th.

In a statement, MEPs from both countries also asked the EU and NATO not to recognize Lukashenko as head of the Belarusian state and imposed sanctions on his government.

Both countries have expressed concern about the situation in the country and called on the government to end the violence against demonstrators and to “immediately” release all those detained during the protests.
