The number of people infected with coronavirus in Japan is nearing 57,000 after an additional 1,021 cases were confirmed this Sunday, a quarter of them in the capital, Tokyo.
The total number of people infected with 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which was quarantined in Yokohama in February, is 56,926. After a dozen deaths since last Saturday, a total of 1,116 people have died from the disease in the past few hours.
Most of the contagion cases correspond to Tokyo, where 260 cases have been detected in the last 24 hours. In prefectures like Osaka, the number of infected people has also increased significantly every day, with 147 cases.
The Tokyo case is particularly worrying as the daily number of infections exceeded 200 for the fifth day in a row. The number brings the total number of cases in the capital to 17,714.
The authorities have asked residents to remain on high alert as the situation in Tokyo remains “extremely serious,” reports the NHK’s public channel.
