The World Health Organization considers the outbreak of the new coronavirus as a pandemic, its director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday.
“We are deeply concerned with both the alarming levels of spread and severity and the alarming levels of inaction. Therefore, we have evaluated that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic, “he said at a press conference.
The disease has already been identified in 114 countries around the world, infecting 118,000 people and with 4,291 deaths.
A pandemic is the spread of an infectious disease in humans over a geographically wide area. Before 2009, the WHO classified it as “Infection by an infectious agent, simultaneous in different countries, with a significant mortality in relation to the proportion of the infected population.
