The Italian health authorities reported 1,397 new cases of COVID-19 in a 24-hour period on Thursday. That number is similar to the one registered on Wednesday, bringing the preliminary infection balance since the pandemic started to 272,912.
This emerges from the latest report from the Ministry of Health, which increased the number of people killed by COVID-19 to 35,507, ten more than the previous day. The number of patients admitted to the intensive care unit has also increased to 120.
Based on the data by region, Lombardy is again the area with the highest number of infections, with at least 228 in the last 24 hours. Only in this region in the north of the country have more than 100,000 cases of COVID-19 been registered since the beginning of the pandemic.
One of the most recent confirmed infections was that of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who confirmed on Wednesday that he had tested positive and remained in domestic isolation after returning from a trip to Sardinia. It is known this Thursday that his girlfriend Marta Fascina and his children Luigi and Eleonora were also infected, according to the Adnkronos agency.
