A 21-year-old Israeli soldier has died after being hit by a stone during an early morning security operation in the northern West Bank. It was the first death of an Israeli soldier last year.
The soldier, identified as Amit Ben Yigal, was part of a battalion that had come to the West Bank city of Yabad to make arrests. The operation initially led to four prisoners: two who were allegedly involved in terrorist activities and two who were accused of throwing stones.
After the operation was completed and the military had already left the area on foot, a dozen people attacked them. One of the stones threw “directly into the head” at the soldier, who, according to a spokesman for the armed forces, lost his life despite the helmet.
The army has launched an investigation to clarify what happened and has started searching the area in search of the person responsible for launching the stone, which according to The Jerusalem Post was thrown from a roof.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised that “Israel’s long arm will find the terrorist”. In addition to Netanyahu, Defense Minister Naftali Bennet and Israeli President Reuven Rivlin also expressed their condolences.
