Israeli intelligence minister Elazar Stern of the centrist party Yesh Atid has said that Syria will be banned from possessing chemical weapons the day after the release of a report alleging that Israel attacked several chemical weapons facilities in the country.
Stern, who declined to comment on a report published by the Washington Post of alleged attacks on Syrian facilities near Damascus and Homs in March 2020 and June 2021 – an attack that would have killed seven Syrian soldiers in the Laboratory – has indicated that Israel cannot accept that the country has chemical weapons.
“We have a neighbor who has shown that he is not afraid to use chemical weapons against his people. You must not have chemical weapons, and that is not just an Israeli issue,” said the minister on Israeli Radio Galatz, which published the message .in social networks.
According to the report published by the US newspaper, Israel carried out these attacks on chemical weapons arsenals in Syria after receiving information from the secret services about the intention of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to activate the chemical weapons program and consented to the dismantling in 2014.
The United States was informed of the attacks, although it is not clear whether the goal of destroying the chemical arsenals was achieved, the American newspaper reported, the Israeli newspaper “The Times of Israel” reported.
