Israeli and Palestinian police officers clash at the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem

The Damascus Gate in Jerusalem was again the scene of clashes between dozens of Palestinians and Israeli police officers on Tuesday, which sparked another surge in violence in the region.

The agents said the Palestinians have started throwing stones at several buses whose windows have been damaged, according to The Times of Israel newspaper.

However, several videos show police firing tear gas and stun grenades at a group of Palestinians who have gathered in the area. The agents have stated that a dozen people have currently been arrested.

Riots between Palestinians and police near the Damascus Gate played a key role in the escalation of violence that led to an 11-day open war between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in May last year.

Tensions in the area have increased in recent weeks. Police have said they have arrested dozens of alleged protesters due to regular clashes.

Palestinian media blame the Israeli police for inciting the incidents and have posted videos showing police use of force.
