Israel arrests around 80 people allegedly involved in arms trafficking

Israeli authorities announced Tuesday the arrest of around 80 people allegedly involved in arms trafficking in a series of raids as part of the largest Israeli police operation against illegal weapons.

According to the Israeli daily “Yedioth Ahronoth”, a total of 78 people were arrested during the operation, triggered by information from an arms dealer who had become an informant.

Operation Ocean targeted the Arab-Israeli community after nearly 100 Arab citizens died this year from increased violence in these communities.

Police pointed out that 40 assault rifles, 13 pistols, 2 submachine guns and 2 ready-to-use explosive devices were confiscated during the operation.

Northern District Police Chief Shimon Lavie has said the authorities have started a “real war” against criminal gangs to ensure “the safety and future” of Israeli citizens.

“Criminal elements have infiltrated local mayors and tried to get public funding. We cannot allow crime to be balanced, ”he said before a meeting with Arab communities during the day in Nazareth, at which the Minister of Justice, Omer Barlev, will be present.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said last week that the authorities had “lost control” amid the wave of crime in the Arab-Israeli community. “We’re losing the country,” he complained.
