Sultan Hashim Ahmad Al Tai, former defense minister of the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, died of a heart attack on Sunday before he was sentenced to death penalty for genocide against the Kurdish population.
According to sources confirmed by the Iraqi news agency NINA, the sultan died in Al Hout prison in the city of Nasiriya in the south of the country.
Hashim was sentenced to death in 2007 for the genocide against the Kurds in the 1980s. The cousin of Iraqi dictator Ali Hassan al Majid, known as “Ali the Chemist”, was sentenced to death with him. and its director of military operations in the Iraqi armed forces, Hussein Rashid Mohammed.
All three had been convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes last June when they were found guilty of participating in Operation Anfal: a series of attacks that claimed the lives of around 180,000 Kurds twenty years ago .
