Iraq is launching a new offensive against the Islamic State in the east of the country

The Iraqi authorities announced on Sunday that they would launch a new offensive against the Islamic State in Diyala province (east) as part of operations that began in May in different parts of the country against cells of the jihadist group.

Iraqi Armed Forces Joint Operations Command spokesman Yahya Rasul said in his report on the Twitter social network that the aim of the operations was “to create a safe environment for internally displaced people to return.”

He also said that this would be the fourth phase of Operation Heroes of Iraq, adding that it would focus on the cities of Al Hinta, Al Mgaisa, Janaqin Tauakul and Zur Um al Hinta.
