September 28, 2020

The Iraqi authorities announced on Monday that they would initiate an investigation into the continued attacks on targets of the international coalition and foreign diplomatic missions in the country.

The chairman of the Iraqi parliament’s security committee, Mohamed Rida, said in statements to the Iraqi news agency INA that Prime Minister Mostafa al Kazemi “will set up a committee to investigate attacks on diplomatic missions”.

He therefore emphasized that this committee would consist of parliamentarians and expressed the wish that it would “achieve good results” and that “the reputation of the state and the security forces” of the country be respected.

Rida’s statements are the result of reports from the United States warning Baghdad of the possible closure of its embassy in Baghdad and the withdrawal of troops if militia attacks on international targets are not stopped.
