Iran gives parole to over 36,000 inmates to prevent coronavirus infections

The Iranian authorities have provisionally released 36,283 inmates as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the country’s prisons.

“Since July 8, 36,283 prisoners have been released,” said Iranian prison service chief Mohammad Mehdi Haj-Mohammadi, quoted by the Iranian news agency Tasnim.

This number includes both recently released prisoners and those whose parole has been extended due to the epidemic.

Iran’s judicial spokesman, Gholamhossein Esmaili, had previously reported that since July 8, the Iranian government has continued to reduce prison occupation to prevent the spread of the virus, and is trying to use alternative prison sentences.
