Iranian judicial authorities reported Saturday that Navid Afkari, a wrestling champion who had been sentenced to death for murder, was executed in Fars province.
The Chief Justice of Fars told the state TV channel IRIB that Afkari was executed this morning in the Shiraz prison where he was held.
Human rights organizations had already warned on Friday that the execution of Afkari was imminent. According to Amnesty International, the convict made a quick phone call to his family on September 6 and was able to say that he was previously held in a wing of Adelabad Prison in Shiraz City, which has high security and harsh conditions, and the call is cut off .
Afkari was arrested on September 17, 2018 and sentenced to two death sentences for two offenses related to the murder of a secret service agent in Shiraz on August 2 of the same year. His brothers Vahid and Habib were also sentenced to prison terms in connection with the murder.
