IPN researchers developed a device that Covid-19 recognizes in 15 minutes

Researchers from the Department of Biotechnology and Bioengineering at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav) of National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), developed a device that can recognize them Covid-19 in 15 minutes.

According to the institution, the device can be connected to the mobile phone via the operating system Android There is a special program to display the recognition process to the attending doctor in real time and to send the result via email. Process that takes 15 minutes.

The device works with the reverse transcription technique in connection with a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP), which enables the detection “in situ” of the virus.

According to the researchers, the device does a blood test with the RT-LAMP, a technique that does not require sophisticated devices, so unlike the conventional reverse transcriptase and chain reaction test, it can be done anywhere the patient is. Polymerase (RT-PCR) recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), their application is limited by the cost and need for specialized facilities.

The development team also agrees that this type of rapid test can be used on asymptomatic patients or patients with mild symptoms so that they do not need to go to a hospital and can be isolated in time to prevent the spread.

This device is ready and the next step for use is to get the appropriate validation against the device Institute for Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE) of Mexico.
