The Indonesian health authorities reported 3,048 new positive results for the coronavirus in the past 24 hours on Tuesday. This brings the tentative balance of cases since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to over 200,000 (200,035).
The Indonesian Ministry of Health has also reported a hundred more deaths from complications from COVID-19, a total of 8,230.
The falls on the tourist island of Bali have tripled. It has added 164 new infections and has already recorded 6,549 positive and 128 deaths. The island is only open to domestic tourism and recent spikes have caused authorities to postpone the 9/11 plan to reopen to foreigners.
An epidemiologist from the University of Udayana, Ady Wirawan, has precisely attributed the surge in infections to domestic tourism. “It’s not because of the visitors themselves, but because the reopening has made people less cautious,” he argued.
