The Indonesian authorities announced on Tuesday the start of a private vaccination campaign against the coronavirus, with which 10 million people can be vaccinated, according to the initiative.
The vials are therefore paid for by the companies, regardless of whether they are large manufacturers and small or medium-sized companies. The country’s president, Joko Widodo, said he was proud that this vaccination had started. “I hope everyone is protected by vaccines and that the crops in these industries and businesses are more productive,” he said.
He has also defended that this measure will “allow a general acceleration of vaccination in Indonesia”. The announcement was broadcast telematically in a video in which numerous companies from around 18 industrial areas near the capital Jakarta also took part.
According to the newspaper ‘The Jakarta Post’, the private vaccination initiative will use vaccines from the Chinese companies Sinoharm and CanSino. In the meantime, the government continues to negotiate the possibility of importing the Russian Sputnik V vaccine for use in this campaign.
This vaccination program is coordinated by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce. For its part, the Ministry of Health has advised that the vaccines used must be different from those used by the government in its public vaccination program.
Indonesia is aiming for group immunity by vaccinating 181 million people, although progress has been slow. About 22 million doses have currently been given, although only 8 million people would have received the full regimen.
