In the first quarter of 2020, more than 500 civilians were killed in the Afghanistan war

According to the latest report by the United Nations Aid Mission to Central Asia (UNAMA), more than 500 civilians, including more than 150 children, died as a result of the war in Afghanistan in the first quarter of 2020.

In its study published on Monday, UNAMA underlines “the urgent need” for all parties to the conflict to protect the civilian population, especially at a time when they are exposed to the new coronavirus pandemic.

The United Nations relief mission documented a total of 1,293 civilian casualties in the first quarter of 2020, including 553 deaths and 760 wounded civilians.

The report points to a “worrying increase in violence” in March after the Taliban signed the Doha peace agreement with the United States, which sets a schedule for the withdrawal of US and international troops, but no ceasefire.
