The German authorities reported a renewed increase in infections with the new coronavirus this Wednesday after more than 1,500 additional positives were registered in the last 24 hours, a total of 226,914 since the pandemic began.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), an agency for combating infectious diseases in Germany, collected 1,510 new positives and seven deaths within 24 hours. The death toll is now 9,234 while the number of patients recovered is close to 204,000.
North Rhine-Westphalia has exceeded 55,000 positives (55,375) and is still the region most severely affected by the virus, ahead of Bavaria, which accumulates more than 53,700. The capital Berlin has registered at least 10,394 people infected with this virus, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2019.
Angela Merkel’s government last week admitted the data are “worrying” and called for the cautiousness of the population, especially young people, as a key contributor to infection.
