The Chilean authorities started the so-called “mega-election” of mayors, city councils, regional governors and conventional voters this Saturday, in which more than 15,000 people will fight for one of the 2,768 controversial positions today and this Sunday.
For the first time, the election will take place in two days to avoid the crowds and coronavirus infections. Voting hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time on both days.
Of particular importance are the so-called voters, who are responsible for drawing up the country’s new Magna Carta.
Although mobilizations began as a result of the rise in public transport prices, demands escalated rapidly and one of the most important was the drafting of a new Magna Carta, in effect since the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, which fell in 1990.
One of the most important features of the composition of the convention is that it will be the same, guaranteeing 17 seats for indigenous peoples. Thus, the new constitution of Chile will be the first in Latin America to be drawn up by a team of men and women.
Before casting his vote, Chilean President Sebastián Piñera stated that it is up to all Chileans to ensure that the elections for this day and this Sunday are participatory and safe.
“Voting means honoring democracy and fulfilling our society. May the voice of the people be heard aloud today in these historic elections, in which we jointly vote for conventions, governors, mayors and councilors. It is up to everyone to vote take place participatory and safe. “, announced the head of state on the social network Twitter.
