HRW condemns the detention of opposition officials and journalists in Ethiopia

The NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) denounced this Saturday that the Ethiopian authorities have arrested dozens of opposition officials and journalists for long periods of time, sometimes without charge, since last June.

He said that one month after one of the most violent civil unrest in the country, the police and prosecutors must disclose where the detainees are and ensure access to lawyers and relatives.

“The actions of the authorities in Ethiopia give cause for concern that they have not abandoned the previous practice of stopping first and asking questions later,” said Laetitia Bader, HRW director in the Horn of Africa.

Bader has argued that the Ethiopian authorities “must bring credible charges against the detainees or guarantee their release” on the basis of facts and evidence.
