HRW condemns attacks by Syrian police on protesters against government financial management

June 28, 2020

Human rights NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) denounced that on June 15, Syrian security forces suppressed beatings in the city of Sweida (southwest of the country) and arrested several members of a public protest against government economic management.

Given the brutal record of “the Syrian government,” HRW wants to convey the fear of family members or relatives that prisoners may die in custody or simply disappear.

The protests began on June 7, when between 50 and 100 people gathered outside the center of the governorate to protest living conditions and corruption.
