Honduras announces that it will move its diplomatic delegation to Israel to Jerusalem

September 21, 2020

The President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, announced this Sunday that he would relocate the Central American country’s diplomatic delegation in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by the end of the year to follow the controversial rise of other countries such as the United States.

Hernández said on his Twitter account that the decision was made after speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “strengthen” the “strategic alliance” between the two nations.

“We hope to take this historic step before the end of the year, as long as the pandemic allows,” said Hernández, who is also waiting for the opening of an Israeli embassy in Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital.

Honduras opened a diplomatic office in Jerusalem last September, officially recognizing the city as the capital of Israel, which the President of the United States, Donald Trump, did unilaterally in December 2017.
