Without much fanfare Heath Tarbert has announced that he will retire entirely from the Commodities Futures Trading Commission later this week.
In one Tweet Wednesday mornings, The former CFTC chairman said he would step down completely starting Friday. He resigned as president in December, which the CFTC officially announced on its website. but he stated that he intended to serve on the commission indefinitely.
Today’s announcement didn’t clarify future plans.
During his presidency, which began in 2019, Tarbert was a strong proponent of the use of cryptocurrencies. For example, he publicly advocated the regulation of ether as a commodity.
Tarbert’s departure comes at a time when the Biden administration has been busy filling certain positions such as the CFTC chairmanship.. Although there have been no formal appointments, the Georgetown law professor and occasional Cointelegraph staff member has Chris Brummerturned out to be a possible contender.
