Hariri accepts TEL’s verdict on his father’s murder: “Today we learned the truth”

August 18, 2020

Former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has stated that he has approved the verdict of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (TEL), which convicted one of the four defendants and acquitted the others, for the murder of his father, who was also former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

“We accept the judgment of the court and now want justice to prevail,” said Hariri, according to Naharnet, in statements to the media from The Hague, where the TEL is located.

Hariri referred directly to the Hezbollah party militia because “it has become clear that the murderers belonged to their ranks” and claimed “victims”, although he did not provide details.

The former president stressed that the TEL ruling “sends a strong message that the era of political crime is over” in Lebanon and therefore called for “confrontation” to be avoided.
