The former leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Hans-Jochen Vogel, died this Sunday in Munich at the age of 94, as his wife Liselotte Vogel confirmed.
“We lost a man who decisively influenced German social democracy and the politics of our country,” complained Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
“The death of Hans-Jochen Vogel is also a great loss for me personally. He was a passionate democrat, whose voice we will miss so painfully,” he added.
“He defended tolerance, respect and peace. In all his positions and functions, he was committed to the peaceful coexistence of the European peoples. His own experience as a war veteran had made him a passionate defender of ‘never again’.” the German president emphasized in relation to the anti-war and anti-Nazi tendency in German society.
