The armed forces, led by General Jalifa Haftar, announced Tuesday that they were withdrawing from areas of the capital Tripoli that were in their possession just one day after the loss of an important military base.

Haftar-headed Libyan National Army (ELN) spokesman Ahmed al Mismari said in a television speech that they had decided to “reposition and station troops on the fronts in Tripoli.”

In addition, before the weekend celebration of Eir al Fitr, the holiday that ends Ramadan, the ELN had withdrawn some of its troops from residential areas.

On Monday, the internationally recognized government in Libya announced the seizure of a major air base south-west of the capital in connection with clashes against Haftar-led forces. “We are proud to have announced the release of the Al Uatiya military base from the claws of criminal militias and terrorist mercenaries,” said a statement.
