Haftar announces the resumption of production in the Libyan oil fields after months of lockdown

General Khalifa Haftar, who is in contact with the authorities based in eastern Libya, announced this Friday an agreement to resume production in the country’s oil fields, which has been blocked by militias loyal to him since January.

Haftar said in a televised speech that the agreement also allows the export of oil as long as the proceeds are “not used to finance terrorism” and distributed fairly, according to the newspaper “The Libya Observer”.

Subsequently, the “number two” of the Presidential Council – the main body of the unity government based in Tripoli – Ahmed Maitiq announced the details of the agreement, which provides for the formation of a joint committee to oversee the distribution of these revenues.

He also stressed that the agreement will result in changes in the exchange rate on exports to include all transactions and a “priority” for providing revenue for “urgent projects that benefit citizens directly”.
