Guterres calls for an immediate ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh

United Nations Secretary General António Guterres on Sunday expressed “extreme concern” over the clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and called for an immediate ceasefire.

Guterres “condemns the use of force and regrets the loss of life and the cost to the civilian population,” Guterres spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in an official statement.

Likewise, Guterres urged “all parties to stop fighting immediately, ease tension and return to negotiations immediately” while announcing his intention to speak directly to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. and the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian.

“The Secretary-General reaffirmed his full support for the important role played by the Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group and called on all parties to work closely with them to secure an urgent unconditional resumption of the dialogue,” he added.
