Guatemala City Councilor burned in protests against coronavirus restrictions

July 27, 2020

A group of demonstrators set fire to the town hall headquarters in the Guatemalan city of San Lucas Tolimán (south) late Sunday after the authorities decided not to lower the restrictions imposed there by the coronavirus pandemic.

The city is the only one in the Sololá department that appears as a “red” area, although the mayor Jonathan López has confirmed that only two positives have been registered, which is why he asked for clarification of the situation.

Nevertheless, a group of residents gathered outside the town hall to ask for explanations and later threw stones at the building after no official had met with them to clarify the situation.

According to the Guatemalan newspaper ‘El Periódico’, some of them later set fire to two motorcycles before doing the same with the partially destroyed building.
