Popular Will suspends three of its deputies for their alleged involvement
MADRID, Dec. 2 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The opposition and self-proclaimed leader “president in charge” of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, announced this Sunday that he will open an “independent and thorough” investigation into an alleged corruption plot involving several deputies of the National Assembly (AN).
“We will not allow anyone's corruption to damage what it has cost so much to build,” said the president of the House – controlled by the opposition. Thus, he said that a research will be launched that will have “the participation and oversight of NGOs, professional associations, media and independent journalists.”
The words of Guaidó, who has assured that he will not allow “corruption to put at risk everything that has been sacrificed to regain freedom” and has stressed that “crimes committed by no one” will not be covered, have taken place after the news portal Armando.info will publish a series of information in which it accused nine opposition deputies of carrying out actions in favor of a Colombian businessman linked to the President's Government, Nicolás Maduro.
According to the information, which have been collected by the newspaper 'El Universal', the deputies, most of them members of the Comptroller's Committee of the National Assembly, would have made arrangements for the businessman Carlos Lizcano, linked to the Local Supply Committees program and Production (CLAP) used by the Venezuelan Government to distribute subsidized food and that has been at the center of allegations of corruption in recent years.
The report states that the deputies would be “lending (…) to make informal arrangements before agencies of the Prosecutor's Office of Colombia or the United States Department of the Treasury” so that these agencies “acquit or stop investigating businessmen as Carlos Lizcano, junior of the already internationally sanctioned Alex Saab and Álvaro Pulido “.
Armando.info explained that since the beginning of 2018 “a plot was being woven to grant indulgences to those responsible for import business (…) for CLAP combos”, in which opposition deputies participated, “some of them members of the Comptroller's Committee “of the AN.
“It is unacceptable to use a state institution to try to wash the face of corrupt people, thieves who have looted Venezuela at all times,” Guaidó said during a press conference.
In his Twitter account, the opposition leader has listed a series of measures to deal with the alleged network of corruption that affects the opposition. Thus, it has announced that the “invalidity of all documents submitted by the investigation, or issued by the AN or its deputies and that exonerate companies or citizens linked to corruption” is decreed.
“The intervention and immediate restructuring of the Comptroller's Committee of the AN is decreed” and the deputies involved in these accusations of all their responsibilities in parliament are suspended, “said Guaidó, who announced that there is an” open call so that those citizens interested in assuming the position of Special Comptroller of the Republic apply. ”
“I will request Commissioner Julio Borges and Ambassador Gustavo Tarre Briceno to bring to the next meeting of the TIAR, on Tuesday 3, the data and names of those who have left in this investigation, and that measures be taken to investigate and prosecute the corrupt”, has clarified.
For his part, the president of the Constituent Assembly of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, has accused the opposition of being “merchants of politics.” “I like it when it vents because the plague is gone, in that lawsuit of corruption in the opposition leadership there is no healthy bone,” he said in his Twitter account.
The First Justice party has explained in a statement that it is investigating three of its designated deputies and that it will withdraw them from the Comptroller's Committee of the National Assembly. Popular Will, the Guaidó party, has confirmed the suspension of three deputies mentioned in the information.
