Greece orders bars to close at midnight as new breakout restrictions apply

The Greek government has announced the closure of all bars and restaurants in Athens, Thessaloniki and several islands in the country and has limited public gatherings to a maximum of 50 people in the main sources of contagion in an attempt to stop the coronavirus outbreak that has appeared in recent days.

The country has confirmed approximately 6,300 infections in the past few hours after registering a surge in daily cases never seen even during the first wave of the disease (235 in the latest tally).

This situation occurs in the middle of the tourist season and a few hours after a religious holiday of extraordinary importance to the Orthodox, such as the transit of the Virgin Mary next Saturday between new record increases in Athens and Thessaloniki, precisely related to nightlife.

In cities like Mykonos, police have been forced to segment parties into private mansions as fears increased that such events were “super-spreaders” of the virus.
