Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced in front of parliament this Wednesday that the government plans to extend Greek territorial waters in the Ionian Sea between 10 and 20 kilometers to Italian territory with Italy and Egypt, following the recent agreements.
“With a bill, Greece will expand the coastal zone west from 6 to 12 miles,” said the president, who pointed out that “Greece is growing”.
“We are the ones who put it into practice. Therefore, in the exercise of our undisputed sovereignty, we are entering a sea zone, particularly that of the Ionian Islands,” he said.
Mitsotakis, referring to Article 3 of the Convention on the Law of the Sea, has pointed out that it is a “right that the country can exercise in future in other sea areas and that was previously exercised by other neighbors”.
