England women were left to rue defensive blunders as they twice fought back to draw with Germany in the SheBelieves Cup in New York.

In new head coach Phil Neville’s second match in charge England fell behind to Hasret Kayikci’s fortunate opener.

The Lionesses levelled when the ball deflected in off Ellen White but Germany regained the lead after an own goal from Mille Bright.

White then scored the pick of the goals when she broke clear and finished well.

England will win the four-team round robin tournament if they beat hosts United States in their final match on Thursday.

Neville’s side had begun the tournament with a 4-1 win over France and he made five changes to the side which started that match.

Germany went ahead in the 17th minute after a scramble inside the box culminated in Demi Stokes’ attempted clearance ricocheting off Kayikci’s boot and in.

England equalised immediately from the kick-off when Fara Williams’ long-range effort deflected in off White.

Germany regained the advantage shortly after half-time when goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain’s clearance bounced back off the heel of Bright and into the net.

However, England got themselves back on terms with 17 minutes left thanks to White, who kept her cool after she beat the Germany offside trap and clipped the ball past Almuth Schult.

Both sides had chances to win it in the remainder of the game with Alexandra Popp heading over, while White and Rachel Daly shot straight at Schult from good positions.

Beckham helps with team talk

David Beckham, Jodie Taylor

England coach Neville called upon a familiar face in David Beckham to deliver a pre-match pep talk to this players.

Neville was a team-mate of Beckham for both England and Manchester United during their playing days.

Beckham, who captained the Three Lions and won 115 caps for his country from 1996 to 2009, was in the dressing room at the Red Bull Arena to offer a few words of wisdom to England’s players.

He was also spotted on the England bench during the match and Neville said: “The minute I got the job, he said he was coming to this match against Germany.”

England striker Jodie Taylor, a 90th-minute substitute in the match, posted a picture on Twitter of Beckham’s visit to the dressing room.

The 42-year-old recently launched his long-planned Major League Soccer team in Miami having spent five years with LA Galaxy as a player.

‘Heads might have dropped in the past’

Analysis by former England forward Sue Smith

In the past heads would have gone down when they went behind but the fact that England now have that resilience allowed them to get back into the game.

England have very good foundations from their two previous managers, Hope Powell and Mark Sampson. Now Phil Neville just has to take it on his way.

There were a few pictures on social media with David Beckham and the England squad when he popped in to see them earlier and that’s really nice.

We saw Jodie Taylor getting a picture with him and that’s what Neville will bring.
