Since Monday, the use of a mask in shops, public transport and long-distance trains has been mandatory in large parts of Germany. For those who do not comply with the regulations, fines of between 25 and 10,000 euros are imposed.
As of this Monday, mask requirements apply in 15 of the country’s 16 states. The last one, Schleswig-Holstein, will implement it on Wednesday, German media report.
The sanctions vary in particular due to the fact that the states themselves have set the amounts and even have announced areas such as Berlin or Brandenburg that there will be no financial sanctions and have appealed to personal responsibility for the use of a mask. In other states there are several days of grace that people have to get used to.
The toughest fines are imposed on companies whose personnel are caught without a mask, while in most states a table is drawn up that increases the amount of the fine depending on the number of violations.
