Ten people were sentenced to prison on Tuesday by a German court for belonging to a Turkish communist terrorist group after more than four years of trial.
The accused were found guilty of recruiting members of the Communist Party of Turkey Marxist-Leninists (TKP / ML), organizing events, and collecting donations for the organization. The main suspect was sentenced to six and a half years in prison.
The ten defendants, nine men and one woman of Turkish and Kurdish origin, were prosecuted in June 2016 for supporting a foreign terrorist organization. The trial was characterized by the manifestations of supporters of the accused who defend that they are only freedom fighters and not terrorists.
The TKP / ML group was founded in the 1970s and has occasionally fought violently against the Turkish authorities. It is monitored by the German secret service, but is not prohibited as an organization in this country.
The accused’s lawyers have argued that the charges against the ten people are based on an investigation by the Turkish authorities.
