Germany exceeds 7.2 million coronavirus cases after adding more than 18,000 on the last day

Germany passed the 7.2 million coronavirus infection threshold on Monday after adding more than 18,000 last day, a number fewer than in previous days, partly due to the reduction in tests at the end of the week.

The Robert Koch Institute, the government agency responsible for combating infectious diseases, stated on its website that 18,518 cases and 68 deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the total since the pandemic started to 7,207,847 and 112,223, respectively.

It was also emphasized that the cumulative incidence rate over the past seven days is 232.4 cases per 100,000 population, which has increased again in the past few days, with 193,262 positives in the past week.

On the flip side, he noted that there are currently around 617,100 active cases and put the number of people recovered from COVID-19 at around 6,478,600, including around 37,600 medical discharges in the last 24 hours.

On December 31, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on German society to join the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and support the renewal of his government plans for the country.

“What matters now is speed. We have to be faster than the virus,” he said during his first New Years address to the nation. “My greatest wish for 2022 is that we stick together,” he said.

For his part, Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach admitted days before that there were difficulties in assessing the situation of the coronavirus pandemic due to the “inaccuracy” of the data on the distribution of the Omicron variant in the country.

Lauterbach influenced statements made to the German newspaper Bild, according to which the effects of this new variant “are not precisely reflected in the official figures due to test errors and reporting delays”.
