Germany celebrates 30 years of reunification with pandemic-limited events

Germany kicked off Unity Day celebrations this Saturday, commemorating the 30th anniversary of reunification, with a series of events limited by the impact of the pandemic across the country.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, the country’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and the experienced politician and President of the German Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble, have attended an official ceremony with reduced capacity in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in the city of Potsdam, about 25 kilometers southwest of Berlin.

Only 130 participants were allowed to attend the event, always wearing a mandatory mask, and in the midst of an important police presence of around 2,500 agents who were supposed to hold several demonstrations against the event.
