Germans inspired by the Christchurch massacre because of threat to kill Muslims

June 8, 2020

The German authorities are investigating a 21-year-old man for suspected terrorist offenses that have threatened to kill Muslims in an internet forum, allegedly inspired by the 2019 massacre in the New Zealand city of Christchurch, in which 51 people were killed.

The public prosecutor of the northern German city of Celle informed on Monday of the arrest of the suspect based in the city of Hildesheim. When searching his home, the security forces found several weapons and files containing extremist messages.

The threat that triggered the alarms was released on May 29, although the suspect had apparently been planning to launch a massacre for some time to attract media attention.

The detainee has already been charged with terrorist financing, gun ownership and the threat of crime. The police counterterrorism unit has taken over the investigation.
