Gemini revealed the functionality of the hardware security key for its mobile application, give customers compatibility with devices like YubiKey for additional security.
Thanks to the compatibility of WebAuthn in the Gemini app, iOS and Android, “Gemini customers can now use USB and NFC (Near Field Communication) technologiesto securely log into the Gemini mobile app, “said a statement made available to Cointelegraph on Tuesday.
The integration strengthens two-factor authentication
Two-factor authentication, or 2FA, offers more security than simply using a password on a website. If activated, the 2FA requires a Mobile device code to access the website after the user has entered their password. The code, a time-limited single-use number sequence, is retrieved from a text message or third-party application, depending on user preferences.
There are other formats for 2FA that require the use of a physical device such as Yubico’s YubiKey. Hardware keys serve as protection against hacking or exchanging SIM cards from mobile phones.
Gemini and Yubico have teamed up
As part of the announcement Twins and Yubico have teamed up. “Yubikeys offers a secure, cross-platform solution that allows you to access your Gemini account through our mobile app and any other website that WebAuthn supports,” the statement said.
Gemini’s flagship navigation platform unveiled WebAuthn compatibility and physical security devices in May 2019 according to a company statement.
Security is the key in the crypto space, an industry that is not exempt from hacks and data breaches.
