Gaza confirms its first case of the Omicron variant and expects a new wave of infections

The authorities of the Gaza Ministry of Health, under the mandate of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, confirmed the occurrence of the first case of the omicron variant of the coronavirus in the enclave this Sunday and predicted a new recovery of cases in the coming days.

As the spokesman for the ministry, Majdi Dhair, announced, the carrier is a citizen of the Gaza Strip who was infected in the coastal region.

Likewise, Dhair added that with the emergence of this variant, which will soon dominate within the Strip, Gaza is inevitably entering a fourth wave of the pandemic.

“We anticipate an increase in the number of cases following the discovery of a case of the Omicron strain and will endeavor to maximize the Ministry of Health’s preparation for the fourth wave,” he said at a news conference on The Gaza Post.

Gaza’s health authorities have so far recorded 189,837 COVID-19 cases and 1,691 deaths in the enclave, one of the most densely populated areas in the world with 2.2 million people spread across 365 km2.
