The French government warned this Friday of the threat of “internationalization” to the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, self-appointed and declared independent by the Armenian authorities.
The French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian communicated this concern to his Armenian and Azerbaijani counterparts Zohrab Mnatsakanian and Djeyhun Bayramov in daytime telephone calls.
“During these discussions I reiterated the urgent need to ensure an end to hostilities immediately and without prior conditions,” he said. “I warned my interlocutors about the warning that the conflict should be internationalized,” he added.
During the day, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated his support for Azerbaijan and hoped his ally’s armed forces would continue to fight until the region was fully restored. He also stressed that Ankara will “support its friend and brother Azerbaijan in every possible way” and will continue to do so in the future.
