France assures that its military operation in Mali will continue despite the coup

August 20, 2020

French Defense Minister Florence Parly has assured that the “Barkhane” operation carried out by France in Mali will continue despite the coup d’état that ousted Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, President of the African country, on Tuesday.

“Operation ‘Barkhane’, claimed by the Malians and approved by the UN Security Council, continues,” Parly wrote on his Twitter on Thursday.

“The French military, which is in contact with European and Sahelian partners, continues its mission professionally to ensure the safety of all,” he stressed.

France has 5,100 soldiers deployed as part of this military operation, a continuation of Operation Serval, which in 2013, at the request of the Malian government, prevented jihadist groups from taking Bamako after they kidnapped the 2012 Tuareg uprising that led to the military coup against the president Amadou Toumani Touré.
