Former President Peter Mutharika’s bodyguard was arrested in Malawi for alleged corruption

The Malawian authorities arrested former President Peter Mutharika’s bodyguard on Tuesday as part of a corruption investigation that began shortly after his defeat in the June presidential election.

The suspect, Norman Chisale, has reported to the authorities in connection with a case in which 5 billion kwacha (about 6 million euros) have been embezzled due to the duty-free import of cement.

Chisale has decided to surrender after it became known that he would be arrested on the questioning of businessman Mahmed Shafee Ahmed Chunara in connection with the case, according to the Nyasa Times newspaper.
