Former Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes was charged this Tuesday with corruption, misrepresentation and money laundering for allegedly receiving funds from Odebrecht to fund his 2012 election campaign.
Paes was charged after Judge Flavio Itabaiana issued a search and seizure warrant on his property in Sao Conrado, south of Rio de Janeiro. Itabaiana had previously accepted a complaint from the prosecution against the former mayor.
According to the complaint, according to the G1 portal, Paes would have received around 10.8 million Brazilian reais (more than 1.7 million euros) in cash from construction company Odebrecht to fund his re-election campaign for Rio city council in 2021, prosecutors alleged To “have found elements that indicate values have been diverted from the public coffers of the community”.
In addition, TV Globo announced that Federal MP Pedro Paulo will be charged with the same charges Paes is charged with. Former Odebrecht manager Benedicto Barbosa da Silva Junior and two Paes employees, Renato Barbosa and Eduardo Bandeira, were also denounced.
