Former Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has died

Former President of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who was overthrown in a military coup in August 2020, died this Sunday at the age of 76 at his home in the country’s capital, Bamako, his family confirmed to the Jeune Afrique portal.

The former president was arrested after the military coup. The following month he was granted exit clearance for medical treatment in the United Arab Emirates due to a deterioration in his health.

The former Malian president stayed in the Arab country until October 2020 before returning to Mali. Since then he has kept a low profile.

Keita’s death comes at an extremely sensitive time for the country, as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has imposed an embargo on military control of the government.

It must be remembered that the military junta that overthrew Keita appointed a president and an interim prime minister, although both were overthrown in May 2021 in a second coup that eventually elevated army leader Assimi Goita to the position of president.
