Five men arrested on charges of killing a Colombian army officer while trying to rob him

Five men were arrested that Friday and charged with killing Lieutenant Colonel Ricardo José Beltrán Jiménez of the Colombian National Army when they tried to rob him on October 17 in the city of Villavicencio, Meta department.

“Thanks to the coordinated work between the public prosecutor and the police, five alleged perpetrators of the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Ricardo José Beltrán Jiménez in the army were arrested and prosecuted,” said a statement by the Colombian Attorney General.

The detainees are charged with the crimes of homicide, trafficking, manufacture or possession of firearms or ammunition, skilled and aggravated theft, the bureau said.

According to the Colombian newspaper “El Tiempo”, all those arrested were sent to prison. Events occurred on October 17 when Beltrán Jiménez was attacked by a group of people trying to rob him while he was arriving at the home of some of his relatives.

“According to the evidence received, the alleged attackers approached the military with a gun to steal their belongings. The uniformed man resisted and was hit by a bullet that was apparently fired by one of the defendants, ”said the prosecutor.

According to the Colombian Attorney General Francisco Barbosa, investigators had to review more than 200 hours of recordings from 63 surveillance cameras to identify the alleged perpetrators.

“To let the public know that (…) we are working hand in hand to attack crime and prosecute those responsible for criminal activity,” added Barbosa.
