Fernández apologizes for his controversial comment on the origins of Mexicans, Brazilians and Argentines

Argentine President Alberto Fernández apologized this Wednesday for his controversial comment during the press conference with Spanish President Pedro Sánchez, referring to the origins of Brazilians, Mexicans and Argentines.

“The Mexicans came from the Indians, the Brazilians came from the jungle, but we Argentinians came from the ships of Europe,” Fernández said at the meeting, according to ‘Clarín’.

This statement has been branded as “racist” by media such as the Brazilian ‘Folha de Sao Paulo’ and has generated many comments on social networks in Latin American countries.

Following this controversy, Fernández replied on Twitter that “our diversity is a source of pride” and assured him that he did not want to “offend” anyone. “Anyway, whoever felt insulted or invisible, has since apologized,” he added.

For his part, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro shared a photo on Twitter showing him performing with a group of indigenous peoples, accompanied by a message saying “JUNGLE!”
